Mr Simon Radley
MBChB MD, FRCS, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon
Mr Radley graduated from the University of Birmingham in 1985 with Honours in Surgery. Having completed his house officer posts in Birmingham, he became a lecturer in anatomy at the University of Birmingham. Following Senior House Officer training he undertook a period of research into colorectal cancer and submitted a thesis for which he was awarded an MD by the University of Birmingham. He undertook registrar surgical training in general and colorectal surgery in the West Midlands. He completed specialist training in colorectal surgery at St Mark’s Hospital in London. During this time he also undertook an overseas travelling fellowship, having been awarded grants from the International College of Surgeons and Royal College of Surgeons of England, to the USA to study treatments for rectal cancer. On completion of his training he took up a post as Senior Lecturer in Colorectal Surgery at Birmingham University and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, becoming an NHS Consultant Colorectal Surgeon in April 2002.
He has published widely on colorectal disease and, in particular, functional bowel disorders. He has been the Clinical Service Lead for Gastro-intestinal Surgery at University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. He has had a key role in introducing laparoscopic colorectal surgery and enhanced surgical recovery protocols to University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and to the Priory Hospital. He is currently the West Midlands Chapter Representative and is a Council Member of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain & Ireland. Over the last seven years he has developed an interest and expertise in the management of advanced endometriosis.
